Interested in making a difference?
We’re always looking for dogs and cats to join the PUP family.
No special skills are required, but basic training is required of your animal and CGC is a plus. Mostly, we’re looking for friendly, gentle pets who are hungry for human attention. (Not just the attention of their own humans, but the attention of strangers.) And for friendly, gentle humans who have a nice way with animals and people and the time and desire to volunteer in their communities.

Hello everyone! My name is John Turner, and I'm honored to be here today. For over 30 years, I've had the privilege of working as a therapy dog handler. With my current therapy dogs Mickey, Jesse, Rekka, Nubu, Kris and Duke and currently serve as the President of Project Pup. My journey in this field has given me a deep understanding of the incredible bond between people and animals, as well as the responsibility we have to ensure the well-being of our beloved companions.
One of the roles I’m most passionate about is as a certified PetTech instructor. PetTech is a pet first aid and CPR training program, and it’s designed to teach pet owners, handlers, and professionals the essential skills they need to keep their animals safe in emergencies. We often think about emergency preparedness for ourselves, but many of us aren’t as prepared when it comes to our pets. That's where PetTech comes in—it equips people with practical, life-saving skills, from CPR and wound care to identifying signs of illness or distress.
In my PetTech classes, I focus on real-world scenarios, helping people understand how to respond if their dog , cat, or even therapy animal experiences a medical emergency. Whether it's a cut from a sharp object on a hike, a choking hazard at home, or something more serious like a cardiac event, PetTech training empowers pet owners to act quickly and confidently. I've seen firsthand how these skills can make a critical difference in an animal's life.
In addition to PetTech, I’m also a handler with HOPE Animal-Assisted Crisis Response with Mickey and Kris . In this role, I work with my therapy dog to bring comfort to people facing crises. It’s meaningful work that highlights the importance of having trained, healthy animals prepared to handle challenging environments. This commitment to safety and preparedness extends to my work as an AKC Evaluator, STAR Puppy instructor, Therapy dog instructor and evaluator and also an AKC Fit Dog Instructor, where I focus on the well-being, fitness, and foundational training that keeps therapy dog teams ready for anything.
As handlers and pet owners, it’s up to us to ensure our animals are safe and prepared. PetTech gives people the skills they need to provide that safety in any situation. I’m passionate about sharing these resources with others because I truly believe that with the right knowledge, we can help our animals live happier, healthier lives.
